Arsenal have serious problems.
When last season ended, there was a huge belief within the Gunners field that they could get a spot in the top four.
Mikel Arteta had faced this team and made it a more solid team on defense and they were getting results regularly against some of the best teams in the Premier League.
However, we fast forward to this day and things are starting to go drastically wrong. Arteta’s men have not won in their last four league games going back to early November and they can’t seem to buy a goal in open play.
Until last weekend, the Gunners had managed less shots per game make each team in the bottom of the five best leagues in Europe.
A 2-0 loss to the Spurs therefore only made things worse for an Arteta under pressure. Arsenal now has 15th in the league already nine points out of the top four.
Their players seem to lack confidence and one of the most disappointing performers on Sunday night was Hector Bellerin.
Should Bellerin be discarded?
The Spanish performance was characterized by a terrible foul in the first half, and did not improve much. His bad pass when Arsenal were on the attack led the Spurs to counter and Harry Kane to score.
That summed up a day that Bellerin just completed 75% of his passes and produced just a precise six-shot cross.
When he entered a promising area, he wasted possession, turning the ball into twenty occasions. This was a night to forget for Bellerin, someone who proved successful with just one dribble. Granit Xhaka was also poor, committing four fouls, but it was the Spanish international who was even more surprised.
There have been shouts for Ainsley Maitland-Niles to start on this side of Arsenal and this performance by Bellerin justified those shouts.
From being linked With a transfer to Wolves in the summer, he has only started two Premier League games, and has been moved to the substitute bench on a regular basis.
This game proved that it should start over. It’s time to leave Bellerin and bring Maitland-Niles back.
He deserves to be on Arteta’s team sheet.
