Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo was furious with referee Lee Mason’s performance after his team lost 2-1 at Burnley on Monday night.
Ashley Barnes’ first goal in more than a year put Burnley on his way to victory as its resurgence continued.
Barnes ended a 17-game streak without a goal as he headed home midway through the first half, while a forceful effort from Chris Wood early in the second made it the first time Burnley had scored more than once in a I’ve been playing at home since February.
They could have had more on an encouraging night, spoiled only by Fabio Silva’s late penalty for the Wolves as Burnley scored eight points in his last four games to put a slow start to the season behind him.
But after the game, Nuno was scathing in his assessment of referee Mason.
Nuno said Sky sports: “The referee does not have the quality to whistle a match in the Premier League. This is a problem we knew about: we had Lee Mason before.
Mason is not good enough
“It’s not about mistakes or crucial decisions, it’s about the way he runs the game. Players get nervous, too many voices, hissing for voices when some players yell.
“We are talking about the best competition and clearly it does not have the quality to whistle the game. I’m very disappointed to say this, but I wouldn’t feel good if I didn’t say it.
“I just don’t want to see him anymore, that’s what I told him. I hope he doesn’t whistle one of our games again because all the games we have with Lee Mason are always the same.
“He can’t control the players, the players argue constantly, both teams. With all the other referees the game flows, there is dialogue. He’s just not ready to do it. “
