Glasgow Rangers defender George Edmundson appears to be destined for Ibrox’s departure following his breach of protocols, along with Jordan Jones.
Which is the word?
Reports in recent times revealed that the Rangers gave the green light for Edmundson to leave in January amid interest from clubs south of the border.
Do you want the Glasgow Rangers to sell George Edmundson?
A number of unnamed Championship and League One clubs are said to be interested in signing the 23-year-old on a temporary basis, even though he is serving a seven-game suspension for violating government guidelines. The gap with his teammate Jones also caused the center-back to be discontinued by the club for two weeks.
Edmundson has yet to appear for Steven Gerrard’s team since the 5-0 win over Lincoln Red Imps earlier this season and it seems his future at the club is out of his hands.
End of the road
Once billed as “impeccableIbrox’s boss player after he made his long-awaited league debut with the Rangers against Hamilton in 2019, it’s been quite a dramatic fall from grace for the former Oldham defender.
Edmundson, whose contract is ready to expire in 2023, he has not played since September, having been left as an unused substitute on the bench seven times in the Scottish Premiership this season so far.
The Rangers’ outcast is the victim of his own disappearance and has no one to blame but himself for this sorry state of affairs. He made his way into contention with Gerrard in recent years, but appears to have undone all of his hard work, as he has fallen further in the pecking order behind Connor Goldson and Filip Helander after the arrival of Leon Balogun. .
Former Brighton defender Balogun signed a one-year deal with the 54-time Scottish champions the option for a second in summer and has become an integral part of Gerrard’s team this season, having made 10 outputs in 12 Premiership appearances for the Gers this season, helping to ensure they have conceded only 13 goals in all competitions.
With Rangers boss Ross Wilson reportedly chasing after Preston North End’s Ben Davies, it seems like time is finally running out for Edmundson as another game with Gerrard is unlikely to start anytime soon.
Hearts forward and Rangers legend Steven Naismith He has previously criticized Edmundson and Jones for their poor decisions, saying: “As they are not guys who don’t have enough weight because they haven’t done enough at the club, they are easily expendable. If the coach says ‘out, that’s it’, there’s not much they can do in terms of forcing the club’s hand to keep them because they haven’t performed well enough, it’s as simple as that.
“It’s going to be a tough couple of months ahead.”
His chances of playing for the Gers again appear to be as remote as his chances of signing former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.
If Edmundson leaves Ibrox in the near future, there is no doubt that it will be a long way back for the Englishman. It may actually be in the club’s best interest to take advantage of it this month anyway.
