The Dutch midfielder is fortunate to have walked away from the treatment table, but several teammates have received inappropriate blows

Georginio Wijnaldum admits Liverpool are barely training as they look to fight their way through a grueling roster of matches that has already led to a series of untimely blows.

The Anfield treatment room is experiencing a lot of footfalls nowadays, with just a week since it sees another name added to the list of walking casualties.

A date in the Merseyside derby with his eternal rivals, Everton, rolled that bad luck in October.

Virgil van Dijk suffered a knee ligament injury that forced him to undergo surgery, while Thiago Alcántara is another who has not been seen since that bumpy trip to Goodison Park.

Joel Matip, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Alisson and James Milner have taken hits since then, with some still stuck on the sidelines.

That’s forcing Jurgen Klopp to be creative with his picks on match days and his pre-game preparations.

The German strategist has voiced opposition to some of the scheduling decisions made this season as games continue to be intense and fast, and Wijnaldum acknowledges that the reigning Premier League champions have little time to prepare.

“I really have nothing to complain about. I am fortunate to be in good shape during this period, ”the Dutch international, who is one of the lucky ones not to have been defeated, told reporters after a 1-0 Champions League win over Ajax.

“I hope I can hold out until the end of the season. It will be very difficult, but I am confident.

“It’s really just playing games and resting right now.

“There really isn’t any training because there isn’t much time for that.”

Liverpool have a little more time to prepare for their next outing than they have for recent games, with a Tuesday night clash with Ajax that will be followed by a date at home with Wolves on Sunday.

They will head to a meeting with Nuno’s men buoyed by progress to the Champions League round of 16, with Wijnaldum satisfied to have crossed that European line.

He added: “We knew that Ajax have a very good football team and it would be difficult.

“A game against Ajax is not easy. It’s more pleasant that we were able to win the match.

“I think Ajax have played two very good games, but of course you can see that we are very old. I think that’s why we win the games.

“In the Premier League you play these kinds of games more often, so you have to be very mature to win them, even if you don’t play well. We did it twice against Ajax.

“I must say that we created more chances than in Amsterdam. I think Ajax has done very well in two games. “
