The Glasgow Rangers return to Europa League action later tonight when they travel to Belgium to face Royal Antwerp.
Steven Gerrard’s team reached the round of 16 after emerging relatively unscathed from a group that included Benfica, Lech Poznan and the Belgian Jupiler League team Standard Liege.
However, what looks like a simple Europa League match may, in fact, be a possible banana peel for the 54-time Scottish champions.
Should Morelos start for Rangers vs Antwerp?
Do not …
Not many Rangers fans will have heard the Belgian team’s name come up in the conversation, and to be fair, Gerrard’s team is a favorite to reach the quarter-finals, as Antwerp is currently occupied by multiple setbacks.
But don’t be fooled by his recent bad form. After all, this is the same team from Antwerp that caused problems for Premier League Tottenham Hotspur this season, having beaten José Mourinho’s side at home in October.
Gerrard’s men, therefore, should exercise caution.
However, they have been boosted by the return of Alfredo Morelos, who has not been part of the first team since his SFA. post last month.
As Morelos and Kemar Roofe missed the final games due to suspension, Cedric Itten had a chance to claim a spot in Gerrard’s starting lineup. However, the Swiss international has arguably struggled to make the most of the opportunity to lead the line in his absence.
But the Colombian could be a major threat to Antwerp’s defense, having previously broken Ally McCoist’s all-time record for goals in Europe earlier this season.
The 24-year-old’s overall tally for Gers is 88 goals in 168 appearances, which is barely a goal once every two games, through Transfer market.
Speaking after his record-breaking goal against Lech Poznan in October, Gerrard saying:
“It’s great for him from a personal point of view. Alfredo is a first-rate player, a first-rate scorer, and it’s fantastic that he’s still here.
“I said it a few weeks ago when people try to compare them; Ally is a legend at the club, she’s been here and she’s done it, and she has the medals to prove it. Hopefully Alfredo can follow in his footsteps ”.
A return of two goals and one asistence It ranks him first alongside James Tavernier in terms of Europa League goal contributions from the entire Rangers team this season.
Dice Antwerp injury fight, Gerrard could give Itten a chance to redeem himself after going blank against Kilmarnock.
However, if you want to be honest when it comes to achieving European success, Morelos is surely your best bet, as his record speaks for itself.
The controversial powerhouse has the goal-scoring ability to cause Antwerp all kinds of nightmares at the Bosuilstadion tonight, Morelos must start all over again.
