Kieran Tierney was omitted from Arsenal’s Premier League team to face Crystal Palace on Thursday night as a precaution due to muscle strain.
The Scottish international has been one of the Gunners’ most impressive performers in recent weeks, playing a key role in their sudden rebound.
Tierney scored and assisted during the 4-0 win over West Brom in early January before helping another in the 2-0 FA Cup win against West Brom, but Arsenal revealed ahead of their meeting with Palace that it will be I would lose it due to muscle tension.
Central Pablo Mari was also omitted as a precautionary measure due to stiff calf.
However, there was better news about Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey. The former Atlético de Madrid star was included in the call-up for the day, having been the last for Arsenal in a 2-0 loss to Tottenham of North London in early December.
With Tierney out, utility Ainsley Maitland-Niles will move to the left back, with David Luiz as a partner at Rob Holding, who recently signed a new contract with the club, in central defense.
Mikel Arteta’s side can move up to 10th with a win against the Eagles in what is a very congested Premier League mid-table – the win would put them just six points behind Everton and Leicester, although they will have played one more game.
Palace, meanwhile, is one point behind the Gunners. They won their most recent league outing – a 2-0 drive against Sheffield United, having gone five games without a win.
