The German’s strong streak as a Blues manager continued Tuesday with a key away win against the La Liga team.

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel expressed his joy at his team’s performance against an Atlético de Madrid defensive team, as the Blues clinched a 1-0 win in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Olivier Giroud’s stun in the second half was enough for Chelsea in Bucharest as they will take a big lead in the home match of the round of 16 tie.

Tuchel said the Blues anticipated their opponents would be able to brace themselves defensively and was happy to have managed to break Atletico’s heavy back line.

What Tuchel said

Talking to BT sport, said the Chelsea manager: “Fantastic result, fantastic goal. Well deserved.

“We wanted to dominate in the opposite field, never lose concentration, not make easy mistakes and always be attentive to fast counterattacks with all their quality.

“It was a very disciplined performance, a deserved exclusion. This is hard work, a team effort, the basis for a great victory.”

“We knew it [Atletico packing their defence] it could happen. We told the guys that if it happens maybe it’s because of our quality and respect. We wanted to be brave and play on his field.

“We knew they were willing to suffer with eight people in the box. The intention was to keep the intensity high. That is what we did very well. We never let them breathe or go out to fight back. We have a great reward with this. result.

“This is one of the toughest challenges to open a defense like Atlético.”

Tuchel’s strong start at Chelsea continues

Since the former Dortmund and PSG boss replaced Frank Lampard last month, he has won six and drawn two of his eight games with Chelsea.

Defense has been a strong point for Tuchel, with Chelsea conceding just two goals in those eight games. Only José Mourinho has had a better defensive start as Chelsea manager.

Tuchel also became the third Chelsea manager to win their first Champions League match in charge when that match took place in the knockout phase, after Roberto Di Matteo and Guus Hiddink did as well.

What’s next for Chelsea?

Suddenly emerging Blues face a tough streak in the league as they will face Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton and Leeds in their next four Premier League matches.

Tuchel’s team will meet Atlético in the second leg on March 17.
