Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel refuses to change his style of play to suit striker Romelu Lukaku, insisting that “we can not just play like Inter”.

Lukaku attracted attention in a controversial interview released on Thursday and Friday, which was originally recorded three weeks ago when he expressed his dissatisfaction with his current status at Chelsea.

He also spoke passionately about former head coach Antonio Conte, with whom he worked at Inter, while revealing that he would like to return to Serie A clothes one day.

Tuchel punished Lukaku for his comments by dropping him from his squad to face Liverpool before the pair held talks on Monday and they appeared to be putting the matter aside the following day.

Lukaku has since come out to apologize to everyone involved at Chelsea, perhaps to the great relief of Tuchel, but the German insisted he would not change his style of play just to suit the striker.

Asked about Lukaku’s comments on Conte and Chelsea’s style of play, Tuchel said: “It works both ways and we do it with each player, we have a certain formation and principles for how we play.

“I feel he is more impatient than anything else, he wants to be more involved and have great chances more.

“It’s hard for him to accept that the grass sometimes does not grow faster when you mow it – in every transfer you have to accept that there is a change of environment, culture, club and teammates.

“There’s a change of style of play and there’s a change of league, he’s not the first player to take some time – he already scored while calming down, but we still adapted to each other.

“We can not just play as Inter player and hope it will bring out the best in Romelu. They had a great season because Conte is a great coach.

“But I think the system he played at Inter not only suited Romelu and the other striker Lautaro Martinez, it also suited the whole squad. If you do not have five defenders, you can not play with a back five, It’s that easy.

“The coaches do what they have to do, Conte played 3-5-2 in the build-up to Chelsea and 3-4-3 at Inter. It’s clear he’s adapting to his players and implanting his ideas from there – that’s exactly what I do too. “

The Belgian scored 47 times in 72 league games with Conte at Inter – his best result under any manager – to a return of 0.72 goals per game. 90 minutes.

It can be compared to 0.54 goals per. 90 minutes for Chelsea across his 13 games since returning when the striker could not yet assist a goal.

But Tuchel added that no player operating under his stewardship will be treated differently from the other, as he and his backroom staff understand that it is their job to maximize their star’s potential.

“It’s obvious to us to get the best out of him, find the right position for him and the right connections to understand what movements and playing styles suit each other,” he continued.

“It’s what we do for each player, it does not matter if the player is expensive or a free agent, or if he is old or young, it does not change.

“Ultimately, it’s up to the player, we can just help fill his potential. Sometimes it’s faster or slower, but everyone is doing their best to reach their full potential – we’re still convinced that there is room for improvement.

“That’s why I was surprised, I do not feel unhappy, not at all. I was not offended at all as a coach, so I do not see a big change in our relationship on the way. “

Chelsea face Conte’s new team Tottenham on Wednesday as the pair battle in the EFL Cup semi-final first match at Stamford Bridge.

In fact, Conte previously managed the Blues between 2016 and 2018, winning the Premier League and FA Cup, and Tuchel was incredibly complimented by the Italian manager.

“He puts them in positions where they are confident so they can fulfill their potential, that’s what Antonio Conte does at home to a unique effect,” he continued.

“I have nothing but respect for him and I really love watching his team play, it will be a pleasure to play against him. We are fully aware of how successful he was with Chelsea, I have no doubt how successful he will be with Tottenham.

“I put him once in a friendly match and we had a nice chat during the warm-up. He knows I really appreciate what he does, his style and all his energy in his team.

“You can clearly see that in every club he works, you see that it is a Conte team, as they defend and attack with all intensity.

“His team is very hard to beat, it has always been like that and it will be like that on Wednesday.”
