French club Lyon are aiming for Moussa Sissoko and have, according to a report, had ‘extensive negotiations’ to buy the Watford star.
Sissoko spent three years at Newcastle United, playing 133 games for the club before joining Tottenham in August 2016. The central midfielder appeared in over 200 games for the North London outfit, helping them finish second in the Premier League and now the Champions League final.
Sissoko left Spurs this summer as watford paid about £ 2.5 million for his signature. He is now the Hornets’ captain and starts regularly – although they often change manager.
The French national team player arrived to help Watford avoid relegation in their first season back in the top flight. However, they face a huge task to keep up with five games left.
Roy Hodgson’s men are in 19th place with only 22 points. They have lost their last four league games and need a huge turnaround to overtake people like Everton, Burnley and Leeds.
Sissoko’s contract on Vicarage Road lasts until June 2023. However, the 32-year-old may end up securing a transfer elsewhere if they are hit by relegation.
Lyon want to ‘strengthen’ by landing Moussa Sissoko
And Lyon are ready to get him a deal at a reduced price. French newspaper The team claims that Ligue 1 clothing ‘seeks to strengthen’ their team this summer.
They have completed scout reports on several players and Sissoko is one of them.
As such, they have had ‘extensive talks’ with Sissoko’s agent about a move to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais stadium.
Lyon know they can capture the midfielder for a small fee if Watford’s relegation to the second tier is confirmed.
Club manager Bruno Cheyrou is confident in his abilities, but just needs to convince other officials before a prosecution can officially begin.
The report does not reveal Sissoko’s feelings about a potential switch. However, he would probably be ready to return to his homeland.
In addition, Lyon regularly challenge for Champions League qualification in France.
This season, they lag behind the top four and are in eighth place, but Sissoko can help increase their chances for next season.
