The United States’ youth international forward was second overall in Wednesday night’s NWSL draft.
Trinity Rodman has said she doesn’t want to be defined by just her famous father after Washington Spirit picked her second in the NWSL draft.
The American youth international is the daughter of former NBA champion Dennis Rodman, but she is determined to step out of his shadow as she begins her own career in professional sports.
“[Being a professional] It’s been my dream forever so this is unreal to me, “Rodman said after she was selected.” The only thing that excites me the most is learning from this. [At] On a professional level you’re going to learn more than you’re going to do well, really, but I’m excited to learn.
“To my dad I’m so thankful, he was obviously an amazing athlete and I got those genes from him but I’m excited to be known as Trinity Rodman and not just Dennis Rodman’s daughter so I’m excited to pave my own path and improve along this journey. “
Rodman was scheduled to attend Washington state and play the fall season, but the coronavirus pandemic meant the season was moved to spring.
Rather than wait for spring, the US youth international forward decided to jump-start her professional career and declare herself for the draft before playing a single minute in college.
“Washington State is an amazing school, amazing staff, amazing people. I fell in love as soon as I got there, but I think when Covid hit the environment, I felt trapped in some way,” explained Rodman.
“Obviously the professional is a higher level [than college] and I know I’m at a point right now where I could be at that level to improve even more than I would be in college, so I thought, ‘come on, I want to improve. Let’s go. ‘”
With the top pick in Wednesday night’s draft, expansion franchise Racing Louisville chose Emily Fox from the University of North Carolina. Fox college teammate Brianna Pinto completed the top three when she was selected by Sky Blue FC.
