Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has sent a transfer warning to star Ben Doak, with Liverpool set to make a switch within the next few weeks.
According to Athletics, Liverpool are close to concluding a deal with Celtic for the offensive midfielder, who could also serve as a winger. The Scottish clothes want to keep Doak north of the border but have little chance of keeping Liverpool away from him.
The 16-year-old has not yet signed a professional contract, which means that Jurgen Klopp’s team only had to pay ‘less compensation’ to get him.
Doak attracts the attention of several ‘top clubs’. There are, however three reasons why he wants to move to Anfield.
The first is the draw to play for one of Europe’s elite teams. Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 and aim to lift the trophy again this season.
The Reds are also known for giving young players a chance. Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Trent Alexander-Arnold are recent examples, and Doak could follow suit.
The last reason for a potential Liverpool switch is the ability to work with Klopp. The German is largely responsible for getting Liverpool back to where they belong – towards the top of the Premier League table.
Ben Doak learns the manager’s attitude
Despite the transfer being closed, Postecoglou believes Doak is best left at Celtic Park.
The manager told The Scottish sun: “I have always said that my role is to take care of the footballers who want to be here. The footballers who do not want to be here? There is another way for them.
“Looking at the starting line-up against Dundee United, there were a couple of boys who started out as ball boys for our club.
“You can not tell me that they have not had careers – they have represented their country, they have won trophies.
‘There are a couple to the south who also started here. People may think that going south is a reward or a guarantee of success.
“Life – and football in general – shows you that there are many paths towards that goal. I think you’re a great place here, if that’s what your playoffs are. ”
Liverpool are also in for Barcelona man
It appears that Doak is not the only winger on Liverpool and Klopp’s radar.
According to Mundo Deportivo journalist Xavier Bosch, Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele could join Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool this summer.
He reports that a move to Paris would be a ‘comfortable destination’ for the winger. When he was born in Vernon, it would take him within an hour of his hometown.
Despite this, however, Bosch claims that the World Cup winner can actually opt for a switch to Merseyside. In fact, he describes Liverpool as the ‘best option’ for the winger.
According to the report, Klopp is starting to fear Mohamed Salah’s departure next season. As such, it is suggested that he reckons Dembele’s ‘pace and dribbles would amaze at Anfield’.
