It has been indicated that Leeds United is interested in temporarily signing William Saliba in January. Kevin Campbell believes the Whites would “love” to take him to Elland Road, as Arsenal hope he will gain valuable first-team experience (via Football Insider).
The 19-year-old joined the Gunners in 2019 in a £ 27 million offer, before being loaned again to the old Saint-Etienne club. Saliba attracted a lot of attention during his time in France, being the center of attention in his transition from youth soccer to the first team.
Would William Saliba be a good signing for Leeds?
His former coach Fabio Frasconi tipped the center back to “go too far” after comparing him to French international Raphael Varane (via Planet soccer).
Saliba could repair Leeds injury problems
If Leeds is pursuing a move for the teenager, then they would answer a lot of questions that arise around their team right now. The Whites are struggling tremendously with the depth of their squad and took a double whammy when Robin Koch and Diego Llorente were injured earlier this month.
Marcelo Bielsa has been forced to use full-back Luke Ayling as a substitute central defender while the duo are out. Although he has been doing a solid job thus far, the boss cannot rely on him to play out of position for the next several months.
That’s why signing Saliba would be a great statement for the club. Not only would they plug a leak in their defense, but the Arsenal prospect would relish the opportunity to play first-team football in the Premier League.
The Gunners clearly have big plans for the youngster, otherwise they wouldn’t have spent such a large sum on such a young player. There is likely no chance of a permanent deal being offered, which suits Leeds considering they spent a considerable amount in the previous transfer window.
Recruiting Saliba on loan would be the ideal move, as it wouldn’t affect Koch’s place on the team next season, but it would still help keep them afloat this season.
