However, his patient approach seems to have paid dividends. He has now had successive outings against Istanbul Basaksehir and Southampton, suggesting that Van de Beek ultimately won the round from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Van de Beek usually plays in an attacking midfield position, although with Fernandes on the scene, he had to adapt his game. Thus, It has been difficult for him to fight his way through the fray.
Nevertheless, Van de Beek insists that he is happy to adapt his game and that he is finally enjoying life at United.
“I work hard every day and I know I can give the team something extra, so I remained patient,” he said.
“It’s okay [playing with Fernandes]. I play in a lot of positions for Ajax, 8, 10 even 6, so I’m used to it. I play in many different positions. “
Fernandes is also convinced that he and Van de Beek are capable of playing together.
Speaking after Sunday’s win at Southampton, he said: “Every midfielder on our team has quality.
“Donny has a lot of quality. We know that we can play together and we also have the team with other players. We all have quality to play and we know each other.
“We can play with three today and then switch and play the next game with another three or another four.
“It doesn’t matter because everyone has quality and we can all be together on the field, everyone can make a difference.
“Donny played a really good game today, but Fred and Nema [Nemanja Matic] they were really important to us.
“They worked and worked and they were two players who calmed down the game and moved the ball. In the second half that was crucial and they recovered a lot of balls and ran a lot.
“We have to score first now! And now we suffer as we suffer in every game! [Laughs] Like I said before, the team spirit today was incredible.
“I think, and I keep saying it, the first half was good but we conceded two goals. We created some chances, the goalkeeper made two great saves.
“Of course in the second half we scored the goals and maybe everyone says it was two teams in two halves, no, the team was perfect.
“We conceded two goals, but I think the level was high in both halves and of course we scored in the second half, which was better for us because we went from two goals to 3-2.”
