Tyrann Mathieu is proud of his LSU Tigers, but it came back to bite him after making a bet with Saints teammate PJ Williams for the Florida State game.

Despite his unfortunate and unceremonious exit from the LSU football program, Tyrann Mathieu remains extremely proud of the Tigers. And he has made it a habit throughout his NFL career to make friendly bets with teammates about his college team.

That hasn’t changed now that Mathieu is on the New Orleans Saints. Prior to LSU’s season opener Sunday night in Week 1 against Florida State, Honey Badger made a bet with fellow defensive back and FSU product PJ Williams about the outcome of the game. And as you know, it did not go in favor of Brian Kelly’s team in the head coach’s first game at the head of the program.

So after the crushing loss, Mathieu (and LSU fans to watch) had to keep their stomachs turning to pay off the bet when he showed up and took a picture with Williams while decked out in Florida State gear.

It’s all in good fun, but the smile on Mathieu’s face doesn’t seem like a man happy to be wearing the clothes he’s in. I guess we can add him to the list of people who aren’t so happy with brian kelly after the first week of the season.

There is hope for LSU to advance if the Honey Badger has more bets to make with teammates this season. A new coach with a patchwork (albeit talented patchwork) can lead to some early growing pains, and that might have been what we saw Sunday night. Mathieu certainly hopes that is the case.

As for the Saints safety himself, he is on a new team after a long stint with the Chiefs and could be renewed with the new opportunity. And he’s probably rejuvenated by just the fact that Wednesday was the last time he’ll have to wear Florida State gear this year.
