Thomas Tuchel revealed how his game plan worked to perfection as Chelsea won the lead in their Champions League tie against Atlético de Madrid.
Olivier Giroud produced another Champions League special to give the Blues the lead in their round of 16 tie with Atlético after a 1-0 win in the first leg in Bucharest.
The Blues forward scored his sixth goal in the competition this season with an overhead kick in the 68th minute, but it was only conceded after a lengthy VAR review.
It was well deserved for Thomas Tuchel’s side, who largely dominated and extended their unbeaten streak with the German to eight games since his arrival on January 26.
A negative aspect was the reserves for Mason Mount and Jorginho, which rules them out of the second leg, but Atlético coach Diego Simeone knows that his team will need to score at least twice next month to pass in normal time. .
Speaking after the game, Tuchel said BT sport: “Fantastic result, fantastic goal. Well deserved.
“We wanted to dominate in the opposite field, never lose concentration, not make easy mistakes and always be attentive to fast counterattacks with all their quality.
“It was a very disciplined performance, a deserved exclusion. This is hard work, a team effort – the foundation for a great victory.
“We knew it [Atletico packing their defence] it could happen. We told the guys that if it happens maybe it’s because of our quality and respect. I wanted them to be brave and play in their half.
“We knew they were ready to suffer with eight people in the box. The intention was to keep the intensity high. This is what we did very well. We never let them breathe or go out to fight back. We have a great reward with this result.
“This is one of the toughest challenges to open a defense like Atlético.”
Giroud knew what to expect from Atlético
Match winner Giroud added: “We came here with strong intentions to win the game, to play our game and we know how we can cause problems for them offensively.
“We have been strong behind in defensive form. I am very satisfied with the victory, it was a deserved victory tonight.
“We know the importance of the goal away from home in the European cups. So I was pleased to help the team win the game.
“We handled it well and we were confident but we faced a great team. I think we were very committed and we knew his main strengths. We fix it, but we have to stay focused and get the job done.
“I’m not overly confident, we were confident in our qualities in the game.
“I didn’t know what to think of the goal, I just concentrated on hitting the shot from above. It was nice to see him go to the back of the net, I had no idea he was offside. Mason Mount said he did not touch the ball. Good for the team, good for me ”.
