The Italian team issued a powerful statement that hit both the authorities and their opponents.

Serie C Casertana attacked authorities and their opponents after being forced to play Sunday’s game against Viterbese with nine men.

Casertana recorded up to 15 positive Covid-19 cases before the match, but they were told they must play or face sanctions.

The club even claimed that some of those who took to the field showed symptoms of coronavirus, but that they had tested negative before the start of the game.

A forceful club statement says: “These are difficult days, full of fear and concern for all the members of Casertana FC, as well as for their families.

“We have a squad decimated by a dangerous and devious virus. Up to 15 positive cases for Covid-19 have been presented.

“Faced with a situation, the dynamics of competition and agonism must leave room for pragmatism. And, instead, a few hours before the start of the match on the sixteenth round of the Serie C championship, Casertana FC is forced to take note of the US Viterbese 1908’s refusal to reschedule the match given the logic that it should have had. made this an inevitable postponement, and Lega Pro itself, which did not consider a postponement necessary.

“In accordance with article 48, paragraph 3 of the NOIF (internal regulation of the Italian Football Federation) which establishes: ‘The obligation to line up the best team allowed by the technical situation itself’, Casertana FC is forced to go to field against Viterbese with less than 11 players.

To this we must add that some of them have a fever, although they gave negative results in the last cycle of tests. It is a danger to themselves and to others.

“We would have liked greater respect for the true protagonists of this sport, those who take to the field every day and who give life to their families thanks to what is a real job.

“In a historical moment in which Italian citizens are fighting, in fact forced to stay at home, a football team, decimated by an invisible enemy, is forced to take to the field at all costs. It is a shameful sign for the entire community.

“In light of this, public health no longer becomes a priority, but takes a back seat to other interests. We apologize to our fans, defenseless victims like us in the face of an absurd decision ”.

Casertana went on to lose the game 3-0.
