Paris Saint-Germain look set to pave the way for a permanent West Ham United switch for Alphonse Areola following a recent squad update.
Areola came to West Ham on a season-long loan from PSG last summer. The Frenchman has been a mainstay of the Hammers team during their Europa League campaign.
East Londoners are battling to reach the semi-finals of the competition for the first time ever. A big thank you can go to, among others, Areola for maintaining that race.
The goalkeeper has been preferred over Lukasz Fabianski in the Europa League. Areola has kept four clean sheets and has only conceded five goals into the competition.
West ham has an option to buy the 29-year-old for £ 11m before returning to PSG. A return to the French giants seems all the less likely after an update.
PSG’s website informs that youth goalkeeper Lucas Lavallee has extended his contract with the club until 2025. In addition, he has previously placed first team squad, and it will probably continue after the renewal.
As such, there may be no room for Areola should he return to France.
That said, it looks like a move to West Ham would be the logical move. David Moyes’ team enjoys a successful period with the Frenchman in goal.
In addition, Fabianski – West Ham’s favorite Premier League No. 1 – is out of contract at the end of the season. There has been talk of a new contract for the goalkeeper, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
As such, Areola could consider starting in the league next season if West Ham were to pull the trigger on the deal.
Fulham still have eyes on the Areola move
It looks like West Ham may have a clear shot at landing Areola. PSG are apparently willing to let the goalkeeper go as they already have other options in place.
A potential stumbling block, however, is the interest from Fulham, with whom he spent the 2020/21 season. The championship high-flying is apparently “confidential” that they will be able to land the star.
However, as West Ham have an option to buy him from PSG, they remain in the driver’s seat.
Given his performance in a West Ham shirt, it is reasonable to assume that they are keen to activate this option.
