The Minnesota Vikings are one step closer to hiring Jim Harbaugh with the Michigan head coach flying in for an interview this week.
If Jim Harbaugh returns to the NFL, it looks like it’s most likely going to be in purple.
According to the Vikings, Harbaugh will be interviewed on Wednesday Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.
“The pages spoke Saturday to measure Harbaugh’s interest in the head coach job,” Pelissero tweeted. “Now, another big step toward Harbaugh potentially returning to the NFL.”
Jim Harbaugh will interview the Vikings on Wednesday
The timing of Harbaugh’s interview is interesting from a college football perspective. Wolverine’s head coach will be in Minneapolis and trying to get another job on Signing Day, where potential recruits will sign their national declarations of intent.
The possibility of Harbaugh leaving the NFL after leading the Wolverines to the College Football Playoffs has been flown this week now. Recruits will already have been aware of that risk.
The unknown is how seriously Minnesota is pursuing Harbaugh. He had undeniable success with the 49ers, making three NFC title fights in four seasons. He has been out of the league since 2014 when he divorced San Francisco after an 8-8 campaign.
The pool of coaches battling for the job has already narrowed down a bit. Pelissero added that 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans decided to stay in his current concert and declined another interview.
It will leave Ram’s offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, Ram’s defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham as the other candidates for the job.
Vikings and Michigan fans should be on high alert. This process is starting to get hot.
