Tottenham Hotspur will be without Japhet Tanganga for the rest of the season after being operated on, the club have confirmed.

Tanganga has gone under the knife to repair an injury to his right knee, a club statement is confirmed. His recovery process will keep him out of action until the pre-season schedule begins. It narrows his season by 19 appearances, 11 of which have come under current head coach Antonio Conte and eight came under his predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo.

The defender, who turns 23 at the end of the month, will now have to wait until next season to get back into action. In his absence, Conte will continue to rely on Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez in the midfield. Joe Rodon is another option, though his playing time has been limited.

Tanganga enjoyed his busiest season as a professional yet. Although his performance levels have been up and down, he has surpassed any appearance from previous years.

Now he has to wait to add to his total Tottenham figures, which currently stand at 43 appearances. He has never scored or assisted a goal for the club, although of course that is not his responsibility as a defender.

Tanganga’s last appearance for Spurs came on January 23, when he smoked out after 56 minutes with a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.

He joins academy student Oliver Skipp on the sidelines. The midfielder has also been missing since January due to physical problems.

He has left Conte with a headache in midfield and now he can face similar concerns with his back line.

What the future holds for Tanganga in the long run is still unknown. He was linked with a move to AC Milan in January, but nothing came of it.

The Serie A team’s interest was driven by an injury to one of their own defenders, Simon Kjaer, who is likely to be back when Tanganga recovers.

His focus will therefore be on getting back to pre-season with Tottenham, who have him on contract until 2025.

Tottenham ready to open defense negotiations

Meanwhile, Spurs are tipped to strengthen their backline ahead of Conte’s first full season as manager.

Reports have linked them with a switch to Turin’s impressive center-back Gleison Bremer. The Brazilian is reportedly also interesting for Liverpool.

According to Tuttosport, which is a newspaper based in Turin, should have a bid of € 25 million. Torino expects offers to Bremer this summer.

Tottenham are among the potential bidders. Conte and CEO Fabio Paratici know the player from their time in Italy.

They could use that to their advantage in the race to pick him up. Turin is considering whether to invite direct cash offers or potential barter deals.

Should Bremer arrive, he would push Tanganga down Tottenham’s picking order. For now it can not worry him; instead, he needs to focus on recovering from his current setback.
