Trade negotiations between the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns for Baker Mayfield are getting hotter.

With minicamps beginning for the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, trade talks have intensified between both parties when it comes to forming Browns starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported Tuesday morning that “trade talks between the teams continue around (quarterback) Baker Mayfield.” The big remaining question in connection with the completion of a deal is how much of Mayfield’s fifth year option salary for the 2022 Panthers is willing to pay.

Jones adds that “it is urgent on Carolina’s part to implement the agreement soon so that Mayfield can have some time in mini-camp with the Panthers.” Carolina has long been in the mix for Mayfield as his market fell sharply after the Indianapolis Colts switched to Atlanta Falcons franchise cornerstone Matt Ryan several weeks ago.

Keep in mind that Carolina spent a mid-round pick on former Ole Miss starter Matt Corral in the 2022 NFL Draft and still pays Mayfields fellow 2018 draft classmate Sam Darnold as well.

The Carolina Panthers feel pressured to switch to Baker Mayfield this summer

Had the bridge between Mayfield and the Browns not been burned to a crisp this offseason due to the inherently ruthless Deshaun Watson trade, he would be the Cleveland starter in a contract year. Mayfield led the Browns to the playoffs for the first time since going to elementary school, guiding them to their first playoff win of his lifetime just one season ago. So much has changed since then …

Since Cleveland is not really an option for Mayfield, Carolina has been one of the most likely landing sites for him, no matter how poorly run the franchise is under new owner David Tepper. The renowned venture capitalist has seen the Panthers win exactly five games per season in the first two years of Matt Rhule’s reign. Carpets already fired Charlotte FC coach Miguel Angel Ramirez during the team’s inaugural season.

Mayfield is better than Darnold and would be the best quarterback on the Panthers’ active list. Because Rhule has to win to keep his job, he should be all about this. However, this would only feel like a stop-gap maneuver for the Panthers to swap for Mayfield. He gets another opportunity to compete for a starting job when the next wave of free action comes here. Carolina will Carolina …

The Panthers may have felt “urgent”, but this team will not be the least bit good.
