The Panthers cannot leave Baker Mayfield, who is still interested in the Brown quarterback

No team does more due diligence on Cleveland Brown quarterback Baker Mayfield than the Carolina Panthers.

Find someone who loves you as much as the Carolina Panthers seem to love Baker Mayfield.

Although still technically employed by the Cleveland Browns, Mayfield is playing on an expiring contract for the fall, albeit an incredibly expensive fifth-year option. Despite having just pulled Matt Corral out of Ole Miss, as well as having traded for his 2018 NFL Draft classmate Sam Darnold, the Panthers just do not appear to be leaving Mayfield. David Tepper clearly wants a Heisman Trophy winner.

CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson reported Friday afternoon “The Panthers are still doing their due diligence in investigating (quarterback) Baker Mayfield – the football player and the person.”

The Carolina Panthers kick the tires on Cleveland Brown’s QB Baker Mayfield

While Corral is certainly an interesting prospect, Cleveland took Mayfield No. 1 overall out of Oklahoma for a reason. He was utterly sensational in Lincoln Riley’s Air Raid attack on OU. Although he lacked the physical qualities to truly be a star in the NFL, there was some belief that Mayfield’s personality could be a focal point in a professional locker room.

However, Mayfield quickly fell into disfavor at Cleveland, especially after how his fourth year with the club went. He is still on the list, mostly because of the financial consequences of his fifth year option. Could a team like the Panthers be willing to eat more of the one-year contract than any other team? There’s also the giant red elephant in space known as the Deshaun Watson case …

Honestly, Mayfield is good enough to start somewhere this season, but whether it’s in Cleveland, Charlotte or somewhere else is still unknown. What matters, though, is whether Mayfield is able to come back from an injury-plagued season. We all knew he was totally beaten, but that did not stop the toxicity from taking over the entire locker room in Cleveland last year.

If the Panthers need to switch to Mayfield, they must do well before the training camp starts.
