The NFL and NFL Players Association on Wednesday announced a new partnership with gaming technology studio Mythical Games to introduce an NFT-based video game called NFL Rivals.

The game will officially launch in 2023, but fans will have the opportunity to purchase 32 collections in limited numbers of 3D NFL-themed NFTs in a series of drops before the game’s release. The game itself will allow fans to compete against other players as general manager of a team in a fantasy-style environment, while compiling lists of NFTs of their favorite players through a game-and-own system.

“With the advent of blockchain technology, we are excited to partner with Mythical Games on a blockchain-enabled game that delivers new play-to-ow NFT features, creating a new adventure for fans who love playing football , “said Joe Ruggiero, senior vice president of consumer products at the NFL. “Interest in NFTs and video games among current and potential fans continues to grow, and combined, it has accelerated the NFL’s exploration of new game models that can deliver an unsurpassed experience to fans.”

The announcement comes just shortly after Major League Baseball announced a partnership with SoRare for a similar NFT-style game for fan interaction. Professional sports leagues continue to search for new ways to interact with fans and take advantage of NFT craze while combining it with interest in fantasy football and other games.

In addition to owning the NFTs, fans will have the ability to access special events, in-game rewards, and other features to reward interaction and play.

“Working with the NFL to create new fans and player engagement through new game design and the benefits of Web3 is an exciting moment for us,” said Jamie Jackson, creative director at Mythical Games. “NFTs with utility can add value to players in the game, and we can not wait to bring these concepts to the NFL Rivals to develop the team management genre by adding the benefits of play-and-play that the community offers. new ways to engage with their favorite teams and players both inside and outside this virtual world. “
