The notification came less than a week after the Algerian Embassy had sent the necessary documentation to the Downs contingent.

Mamelodi Sundowns has been barred from entering Algeria ahead of their Caf Champions League Group B match against CR Belouizdad on Tuesday due to “new medical restrictions” in the North African country.

Masandawana broke the news Thursday night and was unhappy with the delay in the time of the notification, which came just as they were preparing to leave South Africa.

The Pretoria club will follow up the matter with the African Football Confederation on Friday noon.

Sunsets issued the following statement on the matter:

“Mamelodi Sundowns will not travel to Algeria for his CAF Champions League match against CR Belouizdad after receiving a communication from CAF confirming that the match that was scheduled for Tuesday (February 23, 2021) has been canceled due to to new medical restrictions in Algeria.

The cancellation comes after the Algerian Federation requested a postponement due to new medical restrictions in Algeria, while Mamelodi Sundowns prepared to leave for Algeria.

Mamelodi Sundowns had made all the necessary arrangements and acquired the visas that the Algerian Embassy made available last week on Friday (February 12, 2021).

At the time of receiving CAF’s communication earlier today, Mamelodi Sundowns was about to travel to OR Tambo International Airport to catch a flight that would take them to Doha for a connecting flight to Algeria.

The CAF competitions division has reported that “the case will be referred to the CAF Interclub Competitions Organizing Committee to make the necessary decision, which will be communicated to all interested parties in due course.”

Mamelodi Sundowns is disappointed with the timing of the communication and the way this situation has developed today.

The club will discuss this matter with the CAF tomorrow at 12:00 (CAT) ”.

The Brazilians, winners of the 2016 Champions League, began their campaign in Group B last weekend with a 2-0 win over Al-Hilal of Sudan at Loftus Versfeld. Also in the group are the giants of the Democratic Republic of Congo TP Mazembe, who drew 0-0 at home against Belouizdad.

Kaizer Chiefs’ first Group C match against Wydad Casablanca was also canceled after they were denied Moroccan visas. A subsequent attempt to play the match in Egypt has also failed.
