The Giants’ 4-13 ends Mara’s most embarrassing run

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The New York Giants continue to hit new lows. It has reached a point where co-owner John Mara has admitted that he has never been so embarrassed by his franchise state.

“Yes. Yes it is [the most embarrassed I’ve been], “said Mara.” I always thought that during the season we reached the bottom, and then it got a little worse every week. “

The Giants (4-13) finished last season with six draws in a row, topping 10 points just once during that stretch. They fired coach Joe Judge on Tuesday, and general manager Dave Gettleman retired on Monday.

Mara admitted he was not thrilled with Judge’s 11-minute walk at a press conference following a 29-3 loss to Chicago. The back-to-back quarterback sneaks in this week’s loss to the Washington Football Team was clearly not his favorite playcalls.

But he insists they were a “minor factor in the overall system.”

The Giants moved on from a coach for the third time in a row after two seasons or less, in large part because they felt there was no other option. They were about to start looking for a new general manager and probably needed massive changes in the offensive coaching team.

Mara did not see that it worked if they kept the referee for a third season, even though he still believes there is a good coach in him.

“Digging a hole so deep I did not see a clear path to get out of it unless we blew it all up in the air and started over with a new one. [general manager] and head coach, “Mara said.

The Giants are now looking for a day-to-day manager who will subsequently run the coaching search, though the ownership will have final approval. The move to lay off Judge appears to have been largely made to give the new GM flexibility.

Not that Mara sees it as a package deal for the day-to-day manager and coach. That does not seem to be the case at all.

The Giants are keen to have a more thorough and comprehensive general manager search this time around. Mara admitted it was “rushed” when it hired Gettleman days before the end of the 2017 season.

Gettleman went 19-46 in his four years as general manager. His tenure took down Pat Shurmur and Judge. It has the Giants currently stuck in this vicious circle (for the third time in a row) of firing a coach within two seasons.

Mara still insists that the job is desirable despite the many recent mistakes and errors.

“Everything I can tell you is based on the number of inquiries I have had from potential candidates, we will not be able to interview even 20% of them all. This is a very desirable job,” he said. he. “We happen to have a lot of working capital on the way. I think it’s an organization that people want to work for. I’m glad that so many people have expressed interest, including people who are very talented and have a legitimate shot to get the job. We have not been rejected by anyone. “

The new general manager and coach will also make all the big decisions, including on the future of quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley. The Giants must make a decision this offseason on whether to opt for the fifth-year option on Jones’ rookie contract. Barkley, who has struggled with injuries the last few years, is set to play in his fifth-year pick next season.

But it is Mara and co-owner Steve Tisch who may have the biggest job of all. They need to finally get these hires right to get the Giants back on track. The franchise has only reached the playoffs once in the last 10 seasons.

Fans have every right to be skeptical about whether they are actually getting it right.

“Well, I have not given them any reason to believe it,” Mara said. “It’s up to me to make the right choice; it’s up to Steve and I to make the right choices going forward to earn their trust back. And it’s not going to be a process from one day to the next. It’s going to be take some time.starting to get [GM] choose done correctly and then hire the right head coach. It will be a process where we have to earn their trust again. Like I said, it’s not going to happen overnight. “
