The Spanish Super Cup returns on Wednesday night with Barcelona facing Real Sociedad in the first semi-final.
The defeat to Atlético de Madrid in this competition last season turned out to be the last straw for the then Barça manager, Ernesto Valverde, and the current manager, Ronald Koeman, hopes that he will not suffer a similar fate if the Blaugrana do not. they make it to the final.
At least the omens are good. Barcelona are unbeaten in eight games and defeated their opponents 2-1 when they met in La Liga in December.
Here’s the starting XI that Koeman should select for the game …
Marc-Andre ter Stegen (GK) – Recently ranked as the fourth best goalkeeper on the planet by 90min, Ter Stegen has been in impressive form since he recovered from a knee injury in November.
Sergino Dest (RB) – Dest, a summer arrival from Ajax, has only missed two La Liga games all season. He is an exciting prospect and should continue as a right back.
Clemente Lenglet (CB) – After missing Barça’s last game against Granada due to suspension, Lenglet should return to the starting eleven.
Ronald Araujo (CB) – Several players could occupy the other center position, including Oscar Mingueza or Samuel Umtiti. However, after having rested the last time, Araujo is more likely to be selected.
Jordi Alba (LB) – Alba, one of the few remaining players from Barcelona’s old guard, has missed just three games all season. He will hope to increase his seven assists on Wednesday.
Sergio Busquets (CM) – There are three certainties in life: death, taxes and Busquets starting from the base of Barcelona’s midfield.
Frenkie de Jong (CM) – After an unpredictable first season, De Jong has been seen more at home this season. He has already equaled the goal implications of last season and will seek to add more against La Real.
Pedri (AM) – 2020 was an annus horribilis for Barcelona, but a bright spark was the appearance of Pedri. We hope that the cheerful 18-year-old will give us more magic in the Super Cup.
Ousmane Dembele (RW) – After a turbulent few years, Dembele has been showing off his talents more often lately. He has registered two goals in his last three games and has especially impressed in the Champions League this season.
Lionel Messi (ST) – His future may not be clear, but as long as he remains at Camp Nou, Messi is the first name on the team sheet.
Antoine Griezmann (LW) – After grabbing a double against Granada last time, Koeman would be crazy if he left out the Frenchman.
