Arsenal have confirmed that Kieran Tierney will undergo surgery on a knee injury and is likely to miss the crucial Premier League top-four innings.

The Gunners have reversed form in recent weeks to become the driving force in the pursuit of a top-4 Premier League place. Monday’s defeat to Crystal Palace, however, put a big screw in the works.

Mikel Arteta’s team lost 3-0 at Selhurst Park, and their defense looked shakier than in previous performances.

In fact, they were without Scotland’s left back Tierneywho has been part of Arsenal’s solid back-fours.

Nuno Tavares played instead, however the summer signing has a history of doing poorly under Arteta. Tierney missed the match due to discomfort in his left knee during training after the international break.

Arteta admitted after Monday’s defeat that Tierney had a bad feeling of injury and the scans agreed.

And a statement from Arsenal revealed that the 24-year-old needs surgery.

The statement added that although a final timetable for his return is unclear, he is likely to miss the rest of the season.

But Arsenal’s full – back problems do not end there. Arsenal also revealed a setback for right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu. The Japanese star has not played since January after an initial injury to his right calf.

While Tomiyasu got through that problem, he is now caring for a left calf injury.

Arsenal were hoping to get him back immediately after the international break, but he will not return to full training for another two weeks, the club have said.

Midfielder Thomas Partey played against Palace but could not complete the full 90 minutes.

Arsenal revealed that he has “worsened” his thigh and his condition is back under control.

Tierney, Arsenal’s setback comes at a bad time

The triple injury blow for the Gunners comes in the middle of – on paper – the most tested part of their top-4 innings.

They have won six of their last nine Premier League matches against the likes of Aston Villa, Wolves and Leicester.

Apart from Palace, Liverpool are the only other team to have suffered a defeat Arsenal in that time – and their upcoming matches are against their top-four rivals and above.

After meeting Brighton and Southampton, the Gunners play against Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham in consecutive matches.

They also play against Tottenham in the penultimate weekend of the season.

As such, Arteta will hope his team can focus on their next two games ahead of clashes with the top four.
