Liverpool and Manchester United players are listed in the 2020 Premier League squad, based on average WhoScored ratings.

Only players who played at least 20 games in the Premier League in 2020 are eligible for selection and the WhoScored ranking system is weighted for attacking contributions.

The team is shown in a classic 4-4-2 formation and midfield four would even make Garth Crooks blush.

Emiliano Martínez – 6.99

Having replaced Arsenal at the end of the 2019-20 campaign, Martinez decided to join Aston Villa in pursuit of regular first team football.

The goalkeeper kept out an impressive 77.5% of the shots he faced in 2020 and has helped Villa enter the European contest.

Joao Cancelo – 7.33

The Manchester City winger added a much-needed offensive boost from the back for Pep Guardiola’s men in 2020.

He averaged more key passes from open play than any other defender in the Premier League and is slowly becoming ubiquitous in a defense that his coach loves to rotate as much as possible.

James Tarkowski – 7.14

No Premier League defender kept a clean sheet longer than Burnley’s big man in 2020, with 14 to his name.

It’s no wonder then that Sean Dyche and Burnley value him as much as they do, turning down a £ 31 million offer from West Ham in the summer.

Jannik Vestergaard – 7.13

Despite initially looking like a flop at Southampton, Vestergaard has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most impressive defensive assets.

The Denmark international won more aerial duels per game than any other Premier League defender in 2020 and it seems the six big clubs will consider moves for him soon enough.

Lucas Digne – 7.20

What ?! Isn’t that Andy Robertson? Digne may not have turned heads as often as his Liverpool counterpart, but with the France international averaging more accurate crosses per game (1.2) than anyone else, it’s easy to see how he made the cut.

Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison love the left back for obvious reasons. Makes it hard to think that fans were ever worried about life after Leighton Baines.

Sadio Mane – 7.37

Mane has established himself as one of the best players in the world since joining Liverpool from Southampton and 2020 was no different.

The Senegalese international finished the year with 17 direct goals as he helped Jurgen Klopp’s side to their first Premier League crown.

Kevin De Bruyne – 7.72

He won the PFA Player of the Year award last season and now WhoScored has named him their best dog for 2020 as well.

With 15 assists and a total of 26 clear chances created, it’s hard enough to argue with his results. He’s still the Premier League player most likely to lift you out of your seat every time he gets into the ball. Absolute box office.

Bruno Fernandes – 7.68

Tightly reduced to top grade, but Fernandes can still hold his head high.

After joining the club in January, the Portugal international transformed Manchester United in no time, ending the year with more direct goal contributions than any other player (32).

It’s hard to remember a player who has had such a huge impact on a club in such a short time.

Jack Grealish – 7.45

People love to hate him but at the end of the day, you just have to admit that Grealish is very good at soccer.

Direct involvement in 15 Premier League goals for a Villa team that struggled for more than half the year strengthens their case significantly as well, while also averaging 2.9 key passes per game and 2.3 shots per game.

Mo Salah – 7.37

The Egyptian international maintained his towering standards throughout 2020, finishing the year as the best player in the Premier League (23).

He continued to be utterly ruthless in front of goal and appears poised to lead another title challenge for Jurgen Klopp’s men, with the Reds leading the way into the new year.

Harry Kane – 7.64

With the third-highest goal participation in the league last year (26), Kane has been in brutal form, reminding everyone of his immense qualities.

His new creative streak has drawn attention more than anything, adding some absolutely ridiculous aids to his repertoire, something for which Heung Min Son has been particularly grateful.
