The NFL is back in the 2021 season, and Week 1 quarterback play brought a mixed bag of exactly what you would have expected and wild surprises. Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson took to where they escaped victories, and Matthew Stafford shone for his new team. Jameis Winston had a strong show in his first start in the Saints’ post-Drew Brees era, and Kyler Murray wowed with some incredible throws against the Titans. But it’s just a week, so there were some quirks too. See only Total QBR. Of the 31 quarterbacks who qualified, Teddy Bridgewater is first … and Aaron Rodgers is last.

On a weekly basis throughout the season, I will assess my current confidence in each quarterback’s game. Who is unstoppable and in the MVP conversation? Who struggles and has to find consistency? Who rises and who falls after each week’s slate? Which rookies exceed expectations and which veterans lead their offenses to playoff battles? And remember, this is based on the present, not the potential of the future.

Genuine backups will not be included, although teams with multiple legitimate launch options may have multiple QBs listed. The list is accompanied each week by some of the biggest takeaways and lingering thoughts from recent performances under the center, including what both bands and numbers say about some of the game’s starting quarterbacks. Here are this week’s QB rankings and some notes regarding the position.
