The talented 20-year-old was on the Gunners’ recruiting radar but, after making the decision to leave Red Bull Salzburg, he moved to Germany.
Dominik Szoboszlai has completed his € 25 million (£ 22.5 million / $ 30.5 million) move to RB Leipzig, with Arsenal losing the highly rated Hungarian winger.
The Gunners have been looking for another creative midfielder, with too many options at Mikel Arteta’s disposal that fall short of expectations.
It was said that Szoboszlai would register on the recruiting radar at the Emirates Stadium, but will not be heading to North London.
That’s because Leipzig has made the most of its ties with Red Bull Salzburg to put a January deal in place.
All relevant documentation has been completed for Szoboszlai to take on a new challenge, with the 20-year-old already in Germany to meet up with the Leipzig team.
His signing can be considered a major blow to the Bundesliga team, and Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are said to have been closely following his development as well.
Striking national and continental outings brought Szoboszlai to the attention of Europe’s top teams, with two goals recorded in six Champions League games.
Interest in securing his services began to grow once it became apparent that he would be available during the winter transfer window.
Leipzig has already won that race and will add him to a group of attacking talents that already includes Emil Forsberg, Dani Olmo, Christopher Nkunku and Justin Kluivert.
Szoboszlai will also have more Champions League football to look forward to in 2021, as Julian Nagelsmann’s team pulled Manchester United out of that competition to book a round of 16 tie with Liverpool.
Arsenal will be among interested observers when the youngster heads to England for a possible outing at Anfield.
They would have preferred such trips had been made in their books, and manager Edu admitted that the Premier League heavyweights are still looking for another playmaker.
He has said: “It is quite clear what we need.
“We need a player with creativity in the middle. We don’t have that on the team right now.
Arsenal have been dedicated to freezing Mesut Ozil from their plans this season despite their struggles for creativity, with the World Cup winner waiting to see if he will return from the cold in January.
Szoboszlai will have been released to open an exciting new chapter in his career by then, with Bundesliga title contenders preparing to release him.
