The Nigerian striker came off the bench to find the net when Serhiy Lavrynenko’s men saw the guests off in a league outing
Stephen Gopey was on target when Inhulets Petrove defeated FC Mariupol 3-0 in Saturday’s Ukrainian Premier League meeting.
When his team led by two goals, the 21-year-old came off the bench to guarantee all three points for Serhiy Lavrynenko’s men inside Inhulets Stadium.
On the way into the match, the hosts had run in two matches without losing – with their last outing a 2-1 victory away in Lviv.
For the visitors – who finished 11th in the 2020-21 campaign – they had lost all their last four matches so far in all competitions.
Inhulets started flying as they dominated ball possession while holding Mariupol on their own half of the field.
After several obvious shirt pulling incidents, Vladyslav Sharay got himself booked.
The Ukrainian midfielder took advantage of a poor clearance from defender Serhiy Chobotenko and drilled a low shot past goalkeeper Oleg Kudryk.
Despite his frustration resulting in the smashing of a few teacups, the coach of Ostap Markevych was able to get his message across, and raised Ostap Markevych’s organization to solid.
Two minutes before the half-hour mark, Sharay completed his support thanks to an assist from Hennos Asmelash. Without marking in the penalty area, he headed Asmelash’s precise cross past the stranded goalkeeper.
Gopey – who was introduced to Artem Sitalo in the 56th minute – ended the visitors’ ambition of a comeback with the third goal 14 minutes from full time.
The African star slotted the ball past Kudryk after being taken over by Ilya Kovalenko, who jumped past four of his markers.
With this strike, he can now boast two goals in the 2021-22 campaign.
Thanks to this result, Inhulets Petrove has now climbed to eighth in the league table with seven points from six games.
For Mariupol, they remain at the bottom of the table with only one point from the same number of matches.
Due to his impressive performances on the Nigeria Professional Football League page, Wiki Tourists – the youngster was signed by the Ukrainian elite division side on a three-year contract.
He hopes to be able to add his goal when Lavrynenko’s men travel to the Cultural Sports Complex Nika Stadium for their next outing against Oleksandria on 10 September.
