Timothy Fosu-Mensah has revealed how he helped convince Donny van de Beek to join Manchester United this summer.
United won the coveted van de Beek’s race in August. But nevertheless, has had to be patient in his first months at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek is starting to get more chances now, having started United’s last two Premier League games. However, he has yet to add to the goal he scored on his debut.
Hope remains at Old Trafford that van de Beek will begin to show the quality that convinced them to sign him on a more regular basis.
There were several clubs in search of the Dutchman in the summer, including players like Real Madrid. However, it was United who eventually came to call it their own.
When the transfer was finalized, he became the second Dutch player on United’s current squad, joining his compatriot Fosu-Mensah.
Now, Fosu-Mensah has revealed that he spoke to van de Beek before his compatriot joined the club.
“I told him United is a big club, if not the biggest club,” Fosu-Mensah said. manutd.com.
“I said it’s good if you get a chance to come here. We have very good colleagues, the quality here is very good.
“I told him, ‘It’s up to you because I can’t make the decision for you but it’s a very good club.’ At the end of the day, it was his decision. “
As mentioned, van de Beek has yet to live up to expectations. But Fosu-Mensah is one of those who are convinced that its impact will be positive in the end.
“He is a good player, a player with many qualities and I think he is also a good guy, so he will bring many positive things to the club.”
Fosu-Mensah, happy to have a Dutch companion
Fosu-Mensah has also struggled to show his best side at United in recent years, as he has had few opportunities.
However, the 22-year-old has started to see a bit more action on the pitch as he looks to complete his journey with the club he joined as an academy player for van de Beek’s former Ajax club in 2014.
Now, he has another Dutch player with an Ajax past alongside him at Old Trafford. Fosu-Mensah is proud of the journey that he and van de Beek have made.
“It feels good,” he added.
“It is special also because we have seen each other since we were very little, we grew up and then I left when I was 16 years old. He was still at Ajax but we always had good contact with each other.
“When I went to United, I was still playing for the Dutch youth teams, the U-17, the U-18, the U-19, the U-21, and he was always there. So it is very special to see him now at Manchester United.
