Inter moved back to the top of Serie A in the latest round of a thrilling title race after winning a 3-1 victory over Spezia.

The Nerazzurri threw a cloak down to rivals Milan as they put them at the top of the table thanks to goals from Marcelo Brozovic, Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Sanchez.

Simone Inzaghi’s defending champions may well end the weekend back in second place, with their San Siro neighbors set to face Genoa later on Good Friday.

But victory at the Stadio Alberto Picco means, at the very least, that the Nerazzurri remain neck-and-neck, with a game in hand at the Rossoneri beyond this recent round, ensuring that fate remains in their own hands.

In a game where the possibilities were initially unmanageable, it took almost 15 minutes for both sides to register an attempt where Denzel Dumfries headed wide.

But there was an idea to it – the misdirected ball was turned into a cross towards Danilo D’Ambrosio, who was waiting for it in the box.

However, the visitors were not as clinically composed as they would have liked.

Nicolo Barella slipped and reached for the ball past the hour to fumble a great chance for a second, while Dumfries struck a subsequent low cross over the crossbar.

But when Martinez sent Ivan Perisic’s cross over Ivan Provedel with just over a quarter of an hour left, Inter looked to be at home and dry.

Giulio Maggiore fired a late reply to set off a nervous final act, but the visitors restored the two-goal cushion during the break, with Sanchez drilling a square Martinez pass home.

What does it mean? Inter keep up with exciting title races

Although their victory turned out to be a slightly more stressful affair than it perhaps should have been, a victory is a victory for the Nerazzurri.

It keeps them on track to defend the Scudetto they won last season, with their extra match – a rearranged trip to Bologna on April 27 – which is increasingly crucial to a successful retention.

Brozovic’s latest goal scorer to spread the love

The Croatian’s finish in the first half made him the 17th different player to find the net in Serie A this season for Inter, showing a remarkable breadth of finishers among their teams.

Only twice have several individuals scored for Inter in a single top-league campaign, in 2007-08 and 2019-20, where they had 18 players.

Spezia fails to break Inter and

The meetings between Spezia and Inter have been few and far between, with only five competitive matches between the two previously.

Spezia have not managed to win any of their meetings with Inter before and now sit with an overall deficit of 16-4 against Nerazzurri.

What’s next?

Inter play Milan in the second match of the Coppa Italia semi-final on Tuesday.
