Speculators take surprising views on Cristiano Ronaldo’s influence on Man Utd

Graeme Souness and Roy Keane were at the opposite ends of the spectrum when they weighed the influence Cristiano Ronaldo will have in Man Utd.

Man udd sent their fan base into rubble last Friday when they announced that Ronaldo would return to the club where he made his name. The Portuguese icon is expected to take on a central striker role and the club and its fans will hope that his arrival can bring them into real title contention.

One person who thinks the mood will come true is Graeme Souness.

The Liverpool legend has often been a vocal critic of Man Utd in his role as an expert on Sky Sports. Unlike Roy Keane, however, Souness believes Ronaldo will have a transforming effect on Man Utd and will make them title contenders.

“I see him making the difference for them,” Souness said. “I think there are two, three or four players in Man United’s locker room who need him.

“Only him or (Lionel) Messi who came into the locker room would make them their game.

“Some players in that locker room feel like they’re arrived, they’re the right thing to do, and no one can tell them anything. But they will improve with Ronaldo there.

“You have no chance unless you sign senior profiles and Man United have just signed the ultimate. Training will be different and the attitude of the players will be different.

“I see United challenge for the championship with him on the team because they had 11 draws last season. They do not want them now because he is on another planet. ”

Keane points to two areas of concern

Keane, who was Man Utd captain when the club first signed Ronaldo in 2003, hailed Ronaldo’s return as “good news”. However, he does not believe the shock transfer will help Man Utd beat Chelsea or Man City to the Premier League title.

“I think that’s good news for United, the fans and the Premier League,” said Keane.

“There is no doubt that he is still a world-class player – the hunger and desire is still there.

“He’s a smart guy and he only returns to Man United to win things. He wants to bring a winning mentality to the locker room.

“But Man United still have the same problems with or without Ronaldo, and there are problems with the midfield and the goalkeeper.

“Man United, who have Ronaldo, make them a better team. But his return does not mean they will suddenly close the gap on Man City and Chelsea and win the league title. ”
