KANSAS CITY, Mo. Free agent Ronald Jones II has accepted the terms of a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, sources told ESPN, confirming several reports.

The Chiefs needed help to run back, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire as the only proven player on the contract position. Their leading rusher in 2021, Darrel Williams, and their best playoff rusher since last season, Jerick McKinnon, are unlimited free agents.

Jones, 24, was a pick in the second round of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018. He started 25 games in four seasons with the Bucs. I have led the team in rushing yards in 2019 (724) and 2020 (978). He also caught 76 passes in the four seasons with a best of 31 in 2019.

But he fell from favor with his coaches after the Bucs signed Leonard Fournette in the 2020 season. Last season, Jones started three games and had 428 rushing yards and 10 receptions.

Jones is the latest addition to a productive Chiefs offensive that is being rebuilt. Kansas City traded wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, and two others who played significantly last season, Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson, are also gone. In their place, the team has added free-agent wideouts JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
