Source: Saints’ Hill for trying to play with an injured finger

METAIRIE, La. New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill will try to play his way through a hammer finger injury he sustained in Thursday night’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys without surgery, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Saints doctors determined that Hill had a hammer finger (the name of a ruptured extensor tendon at the fingertip), according to the source. Hill’s injury, however, was not as extensive as the one Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson sustained earlier in the year, which required surgery. Wilson received both a hammer finger and a fracture dislocation on a separate joint in the same finger.

ESPN’s injury analyst and physiotherapist Stephania Bell said it’s viable for Hill to play without surgery as it’s a stand-alone injury.

“My expectation is that we will see them customize a rail that is similar to what they have made [Thursday] night that is open on the subway so he can feel and grab the ball, “Bell said. So when he is not playing, he will probably be in a more robust shine. It is not ideal for a quarterback to play with a index finger. But over time, he will probably get used to it and adapt to it. And as long as everyone agrees that he can be functional and comfortable, there is not really any opposition to him continuing to play. “

Hill was injured when he hit his middle finger on his right throwing hand against another player in the first quarter of Thursday’s 27-17 loss. I played the rest of the game with a splint on my finger and finished with four interceptions.

“It took a while to get used to,” Hill admitted after the match. “Every time you put something else on your finger [it affects] pull on the ball and stuff like that. But it was ok. “

Hill finished the game 19 of 41 passes in 264 yards, two touchdowns and the four interceptions in his first start of the 2021 season – three of which came in the fourth quarter, while he admittedly began to “press”. He also ran the ball 11 times in 101 yards despite playing through the pain of a partially torn plantar fascia he suffered in week 10.

“I thought he played with a lot of heart, a lot of courage. We did not help him in the first half,” Saints coach Sean Payton said after the game.

If he is judged to be healthy enough to play close to full strength, Hill has a good chance of remaining in the starting lineup for the Saints (5-7) when they play the New York Jets again in Week 14. Despite the ugly result and fourth-quarter implosion, Hills’ running ability gave at least some element of juice to an offense that has flattened ever since the original starting QB. Jameis Winston suffered a torn ACL in Week 8.

The Saints have been 0-5 since Winston was injured. Veteran backup Trevor Siemian helped lead the Saints to a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after replacing Winston in the second quarter of that Week 8 game. But then he got 0-4 as a starter, while the offense fell back for every week that passed – largely due to an overwhelming shower of injuries.

The Saints are hoping to get returning Alvin Kamara and offensive tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk back from knee injuries soon.

Hill is now 3-2 in his career starting after having 3-1 as a replacement for Drew Brees last year. I completed 82 of 114 passes in those games (71.9%) for 834 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran the ball 39 times in 209 yards and four TDs, but lost three fumbles.

The 31-year-old signed a unique contract extension last week that is worth a base value of $ 40 million over four years if he continues to play his usual role as QB / RB / TE / WR, but can be up to $ 95 million if he becomes the team’s starting quarterback and reaches high incentives.
