SANTA CLARA, Calif. – While the San Francisco 49ers await a clean health declaration on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo that could pave the way for his eventual departure, they have apologized to him from this week’s mandatory minicamp, a league source told ESPN.
That Garoppolo is not participating in this week’s minicamp is no surprise, as he has not participated in the team’s offseason conditioning program. The NFL Network first reported that Garoppolo has been apologized for.
Garoppolo is still recovering from the right shoulder surgery he underwent in March, a procedure that has delayed the team’s efforts to replace him. While Trey Lance has worked as the 49ers’ starting quarterback during the offseason program, Garoppolo has spent most of his offseason on rehab in Southern California.
The hope for both sides is that when Garoppolo gets permission to start throwing again – it is expected to happen in late June or early July – a trade will take shape.
“Nothing has changed since the surgery, we knew where we were before that, and then he got the surgery so everything went to a standstill,” coach Kyle Shanahan said on May 24. “I expect that at some point, most likely it will be. Acted, but who knows. It’s not a guarantee, and it’s just been on hold since it happened. And when he’s healthy, we’ll see, what’s going on. “
While organized team activities are voluntary, the mini-camp throughout the squad is one part of the offseason program that is mandatory for all players. Those who do not show up without apology are subject to fines.
Garoppolo enters the final season of his contract and is scheduled to count $ 26.95 million against the salary cap by 2022. Veteran Nate Sudfeld has been the team’s No. 2 quarterback behind Lance in the OTAs with rookie Brock Purdy in No. 3 spot.
The 49ers were originally scheduled to hold the minicamp June 13-15, but decided last week to move up. They are scheduled to train Tuesday through Thursday.
