Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can’t wait to resume hostilities with Leeds this weekend as the old foes finally meet again in the Premier League.
Much has changed since the rivals’ last first division meeting in February 2004, with only two cup matches during a period in which the Yorkshire team’s struggles even saw it fall to third tier.
Solskjaer came off the bench in their last Premier League match and loved the regular matchups with Leeds, where his double in a 4-3 win for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men in 2002 was a particular highlight.
“I can’t wait”, the first United the forward said before Sunday’s first competitive meeting in nine years.
“It’s been too long, of course. I know how much it means to our fans, I know how much it means to our club.
“He’s a different guy from Leeds who comes with a coach who has really done a great job with them and will test us to the limit.
“There were fierce games, flying tackles, players from both teams who were winners.
“We had a few fights, of course. Elland Road wasn’t the quietest place when we got off the coach and walked into the stadium and into the stadium, let’s put it that way. “
When asked if he had a particularly pleasant memory of facing Leeds as a player, he said with a smile: “Yes, a lot. I enjoyed scoring two goals in a win at Elland Road.
I enjoyed a head back stick, came in as a substitute, it was a Giggsy (Ryan Giggs) cross, and headed the other way (to secure a 1-1 draw in 2001).
“They were two good teams in their day, I have to say.
“I liked the preparation of the games and the quality that of course also put us to the test as a team, so many good memories.”

Cavani may miss Leeds clash
Meanwhile, Solskjaer said Edinson Cavani’s summer signing could miss the match.
The 33-year-old must take a late fitness test after missing the last few games with a groin problem.
“He’s very meticulous in his rehab work and he’s not feeling well,” Solskjaer said. “He couldn’t play this game, so let’s see how he feels in the last training session. It was a muscle injury that he felt in his groin. “
Meanwhile, defenders Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe should be available for selection.
