No, this is not a Christmas joke. Shkodran Mustafi’s agent has confirmed that Arsenal’s failure is in talks with another club for an exit from Emirates Stadium, and that club is the Spanish giant Barcelona!
The German international’s contract expires at the end of the season, and there have been no signs of a new deal on the horizon, meaning he is free to negotiate a move to another club in January.
And unbelievably, you may be about to get the move of your life away from North London. When Mustafi’s agent Emre Ozturk was recently asked about a post of himself on Instagram at Camp Nou, he said SPOX journalist Fabian Zerche that he was in Barcelona to negotiate on behalf of the Arsenal man.
“I am not in Barcelona for Yusuf Demir, but for Shkodran Mustafi from Arsenal, who we also represent,” explained the agent.
Ozturk also captioned the Instagram post in question with the headline ‘meeting ready’, banishing the theory that the agent was simply purchasing a tour of the stadium as a Christmas present for his client.
However, it is unclear if a reduced price deal is being arranged for an immediate transfer in the January window, or if Barca are lining up the Arsenal player at a free price for the 2021/22 campaign.
Mustafi joined the Gunners in 2016 for a whopping £ 35 million, but his time in the capital has been a disaster. A series of high-profile mistakes led to the 28-year-old becoming notorious as a drag on Arsenal, and his poor form this year has restricted him to just two league appearances.
He took part in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City, in which he received a yellow card and conceded four goals, as the Gunners crashed under weak circumstances.
