Real Madrid fought back from 2-0 down to beat Sevilla 3-2 as Karim Benzema’s winner of the break took them one step closer to winning the title.

Sevilla seemed to breathe life back into LaLiga’s title race, but Carlo Ancelotti’s team produced a brutal performance in the second half to make a real statement.

Madrid, who may have suffered some hangovers in the Champions League, were sluggish and found themselves behind to goals from Ivan Rakitic and Erik Lamela, both caused by defensive mishaps.

But the game pattern was dramatically turned upside down after the break, with Rodrygo retiring and second-placed Nacho Fernandez equalizing before the king of comebacks Benzema closed the turning point.

A promising start from Sevilla brought a well-deserved opening in the 21st minute when Rakitic saw his free kick fly directly through Madrid’s weak wall and into the net.

Sevilla doubled the lead four minutes later and Lamela stuck into an empty net after Jesus Corona came in behind Eder Militao and got a seat before Thibaut Courtois could throw himself.

Eduardo Camaving somehow escaped another booking for what appeared to be an obvious mistake from behind on Anthony Martial who had to be withdrawn due to injury and the Madrid midfielder was replaced at the break by Rodrygo , which was crucial almost immediately when he turned in. Dani Carvajal’s low cross to reduce the deficit.

Vinicius thought he had restored parity when he hammered in with 16 minutes left, but it was wiped out for an apparent handball – a decision referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez held on to after consulting VAR.

But Madrid were far from finished when Nacho smashed home from Carvajal’s cut to subsequently tee up talisman Benzema to appropriately get the winner, showing tremendous calm before choosing his place after fine work by Rodrygo.

What does it mean? The LaLiga title all except Madrid after yet another display of character

Even before this match, Madrid’s 12-point lead at the summit would take some upheaval, but the fact that Barcelona have two matches in hand meant that there was still a hint of doubt.

But as Madrid will certainly only expect to be caused by problems by Atletico Madrid and Real Betis during a fairly friendly innings, it is difficult to see them lose enough points for Barca to take advantage of it.

And in fairness will have to say that they do not serve. While the 4-0 Clasico defeat to Barca was a shocking low, the Madrid team has made it a habit to show an admirable mentality in recent weeks, and this time it has certainly put them out of reach.

Rodrygo changes the game

Rodrygo has emerged as a truly excellent opportunity in recent times, not least on Tuesday when he scored against Chelsea, but Sunday’s display was a whole other level.

Benzema, who scored his 25th LaLiga goal (the best goal of his Madrid career) will be praised, but from the right side Rodrygo made a huge difference to Madrid’s last-third balance following his half-time introduction with a goal and assist for the winner – though there will be many who feel that the man he replaced, Camavinga, should have been expelled.

Mir fails to lead effectively

Rafa Mir was brought to the forefront after Martial’s retirement and had very little influence. He made almost no impression on Militao and David Alaba, and on one occasion where he had a clear opening, he inexplicably headed over from close range.

What’s next?

Madrid will look to take momentum from this into Wednesday’s trip to Osasuna, while Sevilla will try to come back against Levante.
