The central Sergio Ramos did not train this Friday with the rest of his Real Madrid teammates after complaining of an illness.
Zinedine Zidane’s team will host Celta de Vigo at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday as they look to get back on the winning track after their disappointing 1-1 draw with Elche last time out.
They may be forced to get by without Ramos in their quest to catch up with city rivals Atletico Madrid. RAIN LAYERArancha Rodríguez points out that the center-back failed to make it to training camp on Friday.
Fortunately, his illness, an upset stomach, was not enough to prevent him from working out in the gym, but he could not join the rest of his teammates.
Zidane is expected to announce his squad for the Celta match later on Friday, and all eyes will be on Ramos and whether the world-class defender is included.
Even if Ramos makes the cut, there is no guarantee that the game will start. Zidane may be forced to Nacho Fernández, who has not played a minute since early January, or Eder Militao, who battled COVID-19 in November and has not been seen since.
The hope is that Zidane has a nearly complete squad to choose from against Celta. As it stands, the only confirmed absentee is winger Rodrygo, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury.
The coach will wait for a reaction from his team when he faces Celta. Drawing with Elche meant that Real lost the opportunity to close the gap with Atlético, and now sit two points behind Diego Simeone’s team after having played two more games.
Celta come into the game on a seven-game unbeaten streak that includes five wins in their last six La Liga games, so Zidane will be desperate to bring Ramos back to give his team an extra boost.
