Sean Payton will not completely rule out training after retiring from his post with the New Orleans Saints.
That may be the end of the queue for Sean Payton, who heads the New Orleans Saints, but the longtime head coach has not officially ruled out a return to coaching at some point later.
Payton had been with the Saints since the 2006 NFL season. He guided the long-suffering NFC South franchise to nine playoff spots, seven division crowns and a Super Bowl 44 championship at the end of the 2009 campaign. As the greatest coach in franchise history, Payton looks forward to what comes next for him, but knows what it is, broadcast, coaching or really something.
Although Payton could return to the sidelines at some point, it may not be in an offseason or two.
Sean Payton mentions that he could potentially return to training one day
It pays Payton to leave the door open to return as head coach. He might just need a year away from football to reevaluate some things. Payton is 58 years old and has been with the Saints for more than two decades. Although he could return to the Dallas Cowboys if the Mike McCarthy era ends prematurely, Payton could also enjoy his next concert in a booth or something.
It’s a minute ago that a high-profile coach joined an analyst counter or a broadcast booth. Payton may not be as dynamic on camera as Jon Gruden once was, but there’s a chance this could be something he’s happy to do. If not, then he can enjoy his retirement and find out what other ways he still wants football in his life. It just will not be training the Saints.
If Payton spends a year out of football, he could re-emerge as the best coaching candidate for 2023.
