Palmeiras approached his first appearance in the Copa Libertadores final since 2000 after an impressive 3-0 victory over River Plate on Tuesday.

The Brazilian team made a forceful demonstration in the first leg of the semifinal in Argentina.

Rony opened the scoring and Luiz Adriano doubled the lead early in the second half, with Matías Vina sealing the victory after Jorge Carrascal was sent off by River.

River, a finalist in the two previous editions of the Libertadores, fell behind in the 27th minute after a big mistake.

Franco Armani mishandled a cross, his foot clearance landing on Rony, whose volley passed River’s goalkeeper by a slight deflection.

Palmeiras, who had another offside shot disallowed in the first half, doubled his lead shortly after the break.

Luiz Adriano easily turned Robert Rojas after a pass from Danilo before producing a well-composed finish over Armani.

To make matters worse for River, Carrascal was sent off for a hasty challenge over Gabriel Menino at the hour mark.

And the hosts were punished almost immediately, Vina headed for a set piece by Gustavo Scarpa to make it 3-0.

Palmeiras came close to adding a quarter at the end, but River has a huge mountain to climb in the second leg in Sao Paulo on January 12.
