Rio Ferdinand shed light on why Harry Maguire suffers at Man Utd when he compared him to a superstar who failed at Old Trafford.

Maguire has endured a fierce campaign at the club level this season. The center-half have become a lightning rod for criticism and were recently hailed by England fans when his name was read out over the Wembley tannoy in the last international break.

That was despite Maguire never putting a foot wrong for the Three Lions. In fact, the difference in performance for club and country has been marked.

And speaks to his FIVE YouTube channelRio Ferdinand described Maguire as “phenomenal” and “unreal” for England.

The former defender then explained why Maguire struggling to copy that kind of Manchester United.

“In an English jersey, he has been nothing but phenomenal,” Ferdinand said. “He has been unreal. You can not say he is a dead player, he has been incredible for England.

“What I’m saying is that for England he’s been fantastic, but they play a certain way of playing football that probably suits him.”

Maguire situation compared to Pique

To expand on this narrative, Ferdinand then cited the example of Barcelona and Spanish legend Gerard Pique.

Pique was on United’s books between 2004-08, but failed to reach the mark under Sir Alex Ferguson.

It eventually made him return to Barcelona in 2008 before becoming one of the modern greats for both club and country.

“Gerard Pique was at Man Utd,” Ferdinand continued. “One could argue that he might not have had the career he would have had in Barcelona if he had stayed at Man Utd because of the way he plays.

“It’s like boxing, styles create fights – it’s the same in football. The way Man Utd’s football and the way they try to play has not suited him.

“Also form and trust. “His confidence has taken a big hit and I do not care who you are, you could be Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane, Mbappe all these players – if their confidence is low, they are not the same player.”
