According to Charlie Eccleshare of The AthleticTottenham Hotspur central defender Davinson Sánchez is now in a position where he would be open to a move next month if the right opportunity presents itself and English Premier League minutes remain a rarity.
The Colombian international joined Spurs for £ 42 million from Ajax in the summer of 2017, becoming the club’s record signing at the time.
Since then, Sánchez has played 88 games in the top flight, five of them this season.
He has found himself behind Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld in the pecking order, as head coach José Mourinho has stuck with the duo as their first-choice center-back pair.
Sánchez has suffered a slump in form since the Portuguese’s arrival, and it’s no wonder he’s keen to leave in search of regular playing opportunities.
However, a departure is unlikely to happen next month as it would leave Tottenham in need of a replacement.
Getting quality players during the January transfer window has always been Herculean, and the Spurs won’t be willing to lose it mid-season.
While Jan Vertonghen’s departure was supposed to give Sánchez a chance to establish himself at Tottenham XI, Joe Rodon’s arrival from Swansea City appears to be threatening his place in the team.
The Welshman was unable to appear in the group stage of this season’s Europa League campaign after being signed after the squad list was sent out, giving Sánchez a chance to play five of the six games. .
However, the 24-year-old didn’t particularly impress and hasn’t done enough to force his way back to the starting eleven.
While his pace is helpful, he remains error-prone and still falls short of the lofty expectations that caused the Spurs to spend £ 42 million on his signing.
Sánchez will have to prove his worth again between now and the end of the season, and it will be interesting to see if he remains open for an outing next summer.
