Real Madrid has become the latest club to show interest in Benfica forward Darwin Núñez, according to Four four two.
The 21-year-old began his career in Peñarol, before moving to Almería in the Spanish second division. After impressing there, he moved on to Benfica, where he has recorded five more goals and five more assists in his first ten outings.
The forward has four appearances for Uruguay, scoring two goals. He has often been compared to his compatriot Edinson Cavani.
Four four two reports Los Blancos are considering bringing in Nunez in January in case Serbian forward Luka Jovic leaves.
Jovic has had a hard time at the Bernabéu since signing from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019, scoring just two goals in all competitions wearing the Real Madrid jersey. It is now believed that his time in La Liga could be coming to an end, with AC Milan, who top the Serie A table, as a possible destination.
If the 22-year-old left in January, he would leave coach Zinedine Zidane with just Karim Benzema and Mariano Díaz at the helm, so Núñez could be a necessary signing.
However, they may need to act fast as FourFourTwo also names Barcelona, Inter Milan, Manchester City and Arsenal as potential suitors for the Uruguayan’s signature.
Barcelona have had their own problems with the forward this season after the departure of Luis Suárez. This left them with Martin Braithwaite as their only natural forward, and he’s also rumored to be on his way soon.
Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan, however, had no problems up front. Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martínez’s partnership is flourishing, producing 17 goals so far in all competitions. However, the latter is constantly linked with large money movements away from the San Siro, so Núñez could be a necessary replacement.
As for Man City, they will be looking for a long-term replacement for record scorer Sergio Agüero. The Argentine is now 32 years old and his contract ends in the summer. At a recent press conference, Pep Guardiola hinted that he could leave soon.
Of the five clubs on the list, Arsenal are probably the most in need of a new striker. The Gunners have scored just ten league goals this season; only Sheffield United, Burnley and West Bromwich Albion have scored less in the Premier League.
According to FourFourTwo, Núñez has a reported market value of approximately 18 million euros.
