The best approach for the New Orleans Saints to address their quarterback problems this offseason is to re-sign Jameis Winston.
While the New Orleans Saints will look at other options this offseason, it is probably in their best interest to re-sign Jameis Winston to a short-term deal to remain their starting quarterback.
Winston’s second season with the Saints ended prematurely with a torn ACL, but Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports New Orleans.[appears] to be familiar with the possibility of resigning ”him. The former overall No. 1 pick had a wealth of talent coming out of Florida State but failed to play on another contract with NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tom Brady replaced him.
Once the Saints have figured out their awful salary cap situation, it would not be shocking for New Orleans to bring Winston back on yet another contract.
The New Orleans Saints appear to be confident in bringing Jameis Winston back
There are so many reasons the Saints cannot go in search of an out-of-season quarterback. First, they have the worst fighting situation in the league by a wide margin. Two, New Orleans only narrowly missed the playoffs, so their first draft pick is not in a place to reach on a so-so quarterback prospect in the 2022 NFL Draft. And three, Dennis Allen takes over as head coach.
Yes, the Saints could switch to a quarterback, but Allen was not a good head coach the first time in Oakland. Although Pete Carmichael Jr. remains the Saints’ offensive coordinator, he becomes a more prominent part of the team now that longtime head coach Sean Payton has retired. That’s why the Saints would do well to bring back Winston, who already knows the scheme.
In the end, the Saints are unlikely to be tied for the playoffs, and almost certainly not Super Bowl-bound in 2022. The good news is that NFC South has the chance to be absolutely awful next year. An intermediate Saints team could most years win the division, with Atlanta and Carolina rebuilding and Tampa Bay in a state of change. Instead of paying too much for yet another quarterback, resume with Winston.
Bringing Winston back will help the Saints stabilize after what has already been a chaotic winter.
