Not that they’d like to admit it, but the Glasgow Rangers can consider themselves lucky to have qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League last night.
It wasn’t their best performance, and it showed, as Steven Gerrard’s team was simply not in the races against Standard Liege, particularly in the first half as Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe struggled to get a foothold in the game.
Who should start early for Glasgow Rangers vs Ross County?
Despite scoring three times, the pair had some of the worst performances of the night as they failed to get on the scoresheet.
Both Morelos and Roofe took only a shot on goal – which was less than what Connor Goldson and James Tavernier accomplished between them – and failed to register a single key pass.
With this in mind, there is the case for Gerrard to start considering other options, including against Ross County in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.
So who could replace them in advance?
Well, we think there are reasons for Jermain Defoe to come into the starting lineup and lead the line.
Last season, the 38-year-old was the club’s top scorer in the Scottish Premiership, with 13 goals in 20 games. However, he has started only twice in the SPFL since then, which is quite surprising for a player of his obvious talent.
Marlon Harewood recently described his former teammate as an “incredible” talent in an exclusive interview with FFC, while Gerrard has admitted that “it’s great to have so many options,” as quoted by The daily log.
Valued at £ 1.2 million via Transfer market, the former England international scored 143 goals and provided 31 assists in more than 300 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions.
Obviously, Defoe is a very different player now than he was then, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially with the ever-reliable Ryan Kent providing rhythm on the left wing.
In fact, we would even go so far as to say that Gerrard has often neglected him so far this season, which makes little sense when the manager clearly rates him so well. Now he needs to have time to shine against Ross County at Victoria Park, having scored three goals in their last six games.
