Ralf Rangnick suggests that the informal Manchester United man is facing the ax

Ralf Rangnick has hinted that Marcus Rashford is facing being dropped unless he can rediscover his best form for Manchester United.

The English striker has been in and out of the side since starting his season in October following a shoulder operation.

He returned to the starting line-up for midweek’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid. But again struggled to influence the game and was replaced with 15 minutes left.

In fact, the Englishman has made 14 starts in all competitions, despite scoring just five goals and earning two assists in 22 games.

His form has prompted Jamie Carragher to call for Rashford to be dropped.

“Marcus Rashford has been on this team since he was a child. He burst onto the scene and he has always threatened to go to the next level when the top players reach and he is not there yet,” the Liverpool legend told CBSthrough The metro.

“We have reached the stage now where I do not think he should be in Manchester United’s XI. His performances this season do not justify being on the team.

“Often he is on the team. Even when people are in shape, they find a position for him.

“He doesn’t fit to play on the right, not at all, so it has to be on the left or in the middle.

“But we’re still waiting for Rashford to take the leap to become a United big. Or a player who can take them to big trophies and he’s not there yet.

“At the age he’s at, United need something better than Marcus Rashford right now.”

Rashford’s replacement in Madrid, Anthony Elanga, equalized duly, and Rangnick made no attempt to coat Rashford’s latest form.

“He is certainly not injured, he certainly has no problems with his shoulder anymore,” the interim manager said. “I think we’ve talked a lot about Marcus in the last few weeks. And I have personally talked a lot with him.

“It’s with him as with all the other players, it counts if they are on the pitch and they just have to perform. I’m pretty sure he’s not happy with his performance right now, but it does not help if we discuss it every week.

“I do not see any reason why he should not be happy. Our results have been good in the last few weeks and months, the team itself is in good shape. He is trying right now to find his best possible form and performance, and we’re just trying to give him a helping hand.

“For training he is in top form, so I decided to play against him. But now it’s about having that transformation from training performance to competition in the league, and that’s the next step he has to take. “

Rangnick reveals goals

United face Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday. And it is only three months ago that a 4-1 defeat to the Hornets meant the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s reign as manager.

United have only lost once in the Premier League since Rangnick was appointed interim manager a week later. But their hopes of Champions League qualification have been shattered by a series of draws.

Rannick said of the Watford loss: “It is clear that morale was down, confidence was down and therefore it was good that Michael Carrick and his coaching staff achieved two good results in the Premier League and an important away win to qualify for the knockout- Champions League.

“My job since then has obviously been to stabilize the team. To ensure that they do not concede as many goals as they did until then. We have achieved that.

“But it is clear that you as a manager will always develop faster. This is the next step, to ensure that in the coming weeks we become more resilient and more stable in our performance.”
