A former Premier League striker has commented that a former Liverpool striker would be a perfect fit for a top-notch squad currently in dire straits.

Former Aston Villa and England striker Darren Bent has suggested that Sheffield United could benefit from having Daniel Sturridge at the helm.

The 31-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by Turkish team Trabzonspor in March.

The Blades are currently bottom of the Premier League without having won the entire season. They are 11 points from safety after playing 16 games, having scored just eight times.

Now secret manager Chris Wilder is looking for strike reinforcements in January.

However, he has already stated that it is not interesting in Sturridge, according to Yorkshire Live.

But Bent thinks Wilder should reconsider his stance on the forward, who lifted the 2019 Champions League trophy with Liverpool.

“You can’t go and give him a normal contract with his injury history,” he conceded, speaking in Talksport.

“But if you talk about paying while you play and he still seems hungry and motivated to play, why not?

“Pay to play you can’t go wrong. Because if he doesn’t play, they don’t pay you ”.

Sturridge is also proven at the Premier League level. The English international has played 218 games in the division and scored 77 times.

His most prolific season came in the 2014/15 season when he scored 29 times when Liverpool lost control of the title.

Bent asks Brewster’s big fee

Rhian Brewster TEAMtalk

Rhian Brewster signed for Sheffield United for £ 18 million over the summer but he has failed to score in 12 league games.

Bent stated that he believes Wilder should keep him aside despite this in hopes that his confidence will grow and the club will get its money’s worth from him.

“If I’m Rhian Brewster, I’m thinking of giving myself five or six games [in the team], “He continued.

“All it takes is one goal, his confidence increases and their confidence increases … he goes and scores another.

“I don’t understand now why Chris Wilder doesn’t say ‘I’ve tried everything else and it clearly doesn’t work, here’s what we’re going to do.

“‘Rhian, you have the next 10 games. Don’t worry if you don’t need to score in the first game, except for injury that you’re going to play.’

“That will give him a little confidence then and at least he knows [where he stands].

“But the fact that all this money was spent on him and he doesn’t play [I don’t get it]. You are probably getting hit by a lot of people saying what a waste of money.

“That doesn’t do you any favors. So if you’re checking your social media, they probably hit you all the time.

“I don’t understand Chris Wilder. If he didn’t think he was the one who scored the goals, why waste a huge chunk of his budget on this center forward?

Blades the next one will face Crystal Palace on Saturday in their next league match.
