An expert has tipped Aston Villa to complete a shocking move for Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino.
The 30-year-old has been at Anfield since July 2015. He has formed a deadly partnership with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane in the attack, but his position is now threatened.
Diogo Jota is in fantastic form and has scored six goals in his last eight Premier League matches. The Portuguese national team player threatens to replace Firmino in Jurgen Klopp’s plans.
The manager admires Firmino’s ability to connect games, but it’s clear that Jota’s output is far above his teammate’s.
talkSPORT expert Tony Cascarino believes Firmino could swap Liverpool for Villa, with Steven Gerrard playing a major role in the switch.
“I think Aston Villa will go after one big Liverpool player and I would not be surprised if Firmino left and went to Villa,” he said.
“Managers love returning to clubs they’ve worked with and Danny Ings has not worked for Villa, in my opinion.
“Ollie Watkins needs a Firmino-type player to get the best out of him, and I think Gerrard will be looking for that type of player.
“When Gerrard talks about exciting Villa fans, they get big.
“I know people will say, ‘Hold on, Klopp and Liverpool would never let him go’, but Firmino has been an undercarriage all too often.
“Jota has taken his place in Liverpool and he may know there is a chance of getting someone.”
Firmino has played over 300 games for the Reds and scored 93 goals. His record for the current campaign stands at six strikes in 15 games after being held back by a hamstring injury.

Klopp misses an important Liverpool showdown
Meanwhile, Klopp has tested positive for Covid and misses the big match against Chelsea on Sunday.
Liverpool will be without the influential German when they travel to Stamford Bridge at 4.30pm.
Klopp has mild symptoms and assistant Pep Ljinders is set to be in the grave.
Klopp recently gave an update about his team. The manager said: “We have three new Covid cases in the team, several in the staff.
“I am not able to say (who tested positive) because we still need to do a PCR. But you will see tomorrow on the team note, it will be clear.”
After the Chelsea showdown, Liverpool travel to Arsenal in the EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday night.
